Broke Girl’s Gift Guide: Affordable Christmas Gifts Under $25

One of my many, many talents (besides being able to talk the ear off a brick wall and trip over flat surfaces) is the ability to find products (clothing or otherwise) that look expensive, but in actuality fall into my broke AF budget. London is an expensive city, and with so many festive things to do around Christmas (rooftop ice skating! prosecco pop ups! carnivals in Hyde park!), it can be difficult to scrounge together the cash for presents while still taking part in every mulled wine soaked outing. Really, even outside of London, Christmas seems to squeeze every last penny out of you, and it can be difficult to find affordable gifts that at least don’t look cheap or utterly lame. So, in the spirit of Christmas, I’m sharing my talent with you, and have found a heap of pressies perfect for your friends and family that deserve Cartier when you can only afford Claire’s.

But first, some of my top broke girl tips for finding affordable gifts:

Shop the sale. I’m a big fan of higher end stores and brands like Madewell, Shopbop, and Wildfox, so I always check their sale section before assuming you can’t afford anything. A few items in the guide are heavily marked down luxe.

When in doubt, personalise. You can’t go wrong with a monogrammed necklace, personalised notebook, or zodiac bracelet. Find affordable personalised jewellery and bits on sites like BaubleBar and Etsy. There are plenty of options under $20, and personalisation always adds a dose of thoughtfulness.

Use a shopping aggregator like Shop Style. you can search hundreds of stores by item and then refine by price, color, brand etc. Want to know what you can afford at Topshop? Simply select the store and slide the price down to $25 and under – piece of cake. These tools cut down on so much aimless searching and scrolling and have helped me find items I never would have just searched for on my own.

Now, on to the gift guide!

Gift Guide: Monogrammed Gifts

Have you heard the classic Southern quote- “if it’s not moving, monogram it!”? Well, this gift guide is for your friends and family members that have taken that quote to heart. Even if your loved ones aren’t monogram obsessed, a dose of personalization to any gift adds a touch of thoughtfulness and elegance. To be honest, monogrammed gifts are also great for recipients you don’t know that well. They’re classic and you don’t have to do too much guess work re: someone’s taste, but they seem more personal just due to the addition of an initial or two.

I’ve included some of my monogrammed picks below – order one for your nearest and dearest or that rando in secret santa with mysterious taste.

Target Holiday Collection

Like most twenty-something females, I am frequently pulled under the spell of Target. During a recent trip for eyeliner that turned into a 40 minute scour of the entire store, I fell in love with their holiday collection. They have several Christmas lines – traditional red and white, gold, copper, rustic – really a gaggle of festive beauties to suit any taste. While the Christmas season is in full swing, and my decorations went up barely before the Thanksgiving table was cleared, I thought I’d share some of Target’s collection, in case you need one more bit of holiday cheer to light up your home

Check out my sneaky in store snaps below and scroll through the widgets to shop my picks.

Marquee lights were everywhere, and I’m definitely a fan. You used to have to spend hundreds of dollars for a sign, but Target has brought them to the masses.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Some classic red and green for all of you traditionalists. How cute are those throw pillows?

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

A bit of gold glamour, if you’re feeling fancy.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

More gold tones. I just love that “Peace” pillow and those furry foot stools.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

This colorful range would really complement a more neutral decor palette. Would love that “Joy” sign in an all white living room.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Last but not least, some silver sparkles. Like Burl Ives says, it’s not Christmas without silver and gold. I also think it’s not Christmas without a moscow mule mug.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Gift Guide: Star Wars Fans

The most wonderful time of the year is almost upon us. A time of warmth, love and reuniting with some of our nearest and dearest – Star Wars will be back in theaters! To celebrate this highest of holy days (Dec 18, the premiere of The Force Awakens) and also that second tier holiday, Christmas, I thought I’d kick off my gift guide series to aide in your holiday shopping.

Of course, this inaugural 2015 guide is focused on all of the adult Star Wars fans in your life aka anyone with a soul. . These ideas are a little more grown up and cool a la Han Solo, but still retain the sense of fun and geekiness a la C3P0 that makes Star Wars so beloved. Lucky for me, a new film means plenty of merchandise to suit any fan’s desires. Check out my picks below.

Cookie cutters – who doesn’t want Yoda shaped Christmas cookies?
Pajamas from Top Shop – the high street retailer uses cool vintage art from the older films, which I love.
The most dope skateboard ever. This is basically a work of art.
Star Wars themed Christmas long johns! Perfect for cozying up on Star Wars Eve.
A very modern R2D2 pillow. This could add a sneaky touch of geekiness to any home.
William Shakespeare’s Star Wars – the saga as written by the Bard. Perfect for sci-fi and lit nerds alike.
J. Crew t-shirt. A very chic take on the saga and a line from the new film.
Darth Vader pom beanie. Nothing like the Empire to keep you warm and snug.
X-wing cuff links. Only for the finest of gentlemen.

My whole family will be seeing the new film together as soon as it comes up, and I hope it lives up to the hype. No more Jar Jar Binks disasters please. Will you all be seeing the new film?

Zara Holiday Collection

With Thanksgiving almost upon us, it’s not too early to start planning your Christmas decorations. My family will makeover our home with the Christmas spirit usually right before Thanksgiving, so we can be in full holly jolly Buddy the Elf mode by Black Friday. Besides, who wants to fuss over a tree and ornaments after an intense morning of sale shopping?

I like my holiday decor to be low-key (IMHO Christmas shouldn’t feel pretentious or fussy), yet still elegant and a bit glitzy – I’m not going to miss out on the most appropriate time of year to bling it out. Zara Home’s holiday collection is on point this year, and meets all of my criteria. Plus, it’s affordable, and you won’t have the same baubles as every other basic betch who went nuts at Target (no offense to my beloved Target or fellow basic betches). Check out my picks from the collection below.

1. Snowflake dusted cheese tray and cover. No holiday party is complete without an awesome charcuterie tray. Who doesn’t like meat and cheese?
2. Bright red bell baubles
3. Wooden reindeer, perfect for a touch of Christmas cheer on your coffee table or in a foyer.
4. Gold stemware. I’m a fan of champagne all year round, but Christmas requires a bit of bubbly. Cheers!
5. Embroidered ribbon to dress up your brown paper packages. (cue Julie Andrews!)
6. A Christmas tree shaped basket, lovely for decoration, or better yet, storing Christmas candies.
Have you found any great holiday decor buys? Or am I a bit psychopathic to be thinking about Christmas already?
